Jake Knew Something Was Wrong. But He Never Guessed How Wrong.
This book read like the TV crime dramas I love (okay, well, I love, like, two, but still). Better, even.
Talk about a slam dunk of a beginning: This book begins with Kayden discovering a dead body. And Jake is already in love with her at this point. I had the disadvantage of reading this series out of order, actually (this was the first in the series that I read), but I immediately understood that not only do Kayden and Jake have history, they have feelings for each other.
Strong ones. And there’s room for them to grow as they’re immediately paired together to work on the case. Right around the time of a sibling’s wedding. And then someone from Jake’s past resurfaces and puts them all in danger…
Though this book was the perfect mix of intrigue and mystery with a little whodunit thrown in, I was slightly disappointed when the killer’s identity was revealed. In the middle of the book. I was completely thrown off and kept checking my Kindle to make sure I was really reading that there was a substantial amount of the story left to read.
But Dani didn’t keep me waiting long to discover that an even deadlier danger was lurking in the shadows!
I enjoyed how she threw in that twist. Then all the tension ratcheted up notch after notch and I was left spellbound until the (too soon) ending. I recommend this book for those who enjoy contemporary crime novels–and just good novels in general.
